the benefits of birth preferences

how to make a birth plan.jpg

Your birth preferences, also known as a birth plan, are your guide during birth and the immediate postpartum. It tells nurses, doctors, midwives, doulas, your partner, and yourself how you’d like your new baby to be welcomed into the world. Here are just a few benefits of having your birth preferences.

You’re educated.

In making your birth preferences, you learn about all of your options before, during, and after birth. That way, if a nurse asks you a question or does something that you don’t want, you are knowledgeable and can have a conversation about it.

You’re prepared and confident.

You don’t want to be making last minute decisions, frantically searching the internet or calling a family member to learn about your options. With your birth preferences, you’re ready if something unexpected happens.

You can advocate for yourself.

This is a huge benefit of having your birth preferences. You and your support person will be able to stand up for you and your baby. While some of us are blessed with great nursing staff and birthing experiences, that isn’t the case for everyone. So, it’s important to be able to refer to your birth preferences if needed.

You can relax (a little.)

When you have your birth preferences, when you know what you can expect, when you have plans if things go awry, you can focus on bringing your baby into the world. And when you have a support person (or more than one) who knows the birth preferences, you can feel a bit more at ease.

Hi! I'm Gigi; I'm a postpartum doula, mother to three toddlers, including twins, and a wife to my high school sweetheart. I’m a #swiftie who loves cheesy novels.

As a former teacher, I bring realistic, evidence-based, and actionable advice (and LOTS of handouts.) I help families get the tools they need to prepare, so once baby arrives, they can focus on resting and bonding instead of researching or stressing. I’m here to streamline the newborn learning curve and help birth parents, partners, and other family members. There isn’t ONE way to have and raise a little human. I’m here to guide parents to find THEIR way so that they can thrive in the fourth trimester and beyond.
