S3, Episode 4: Build Your Village with Flor Campos
In this episode, Flor and I discuss:
What do you think having a “village” means?
A village is a way to communicate - asking for things that you need or things you want to share and having those exchanges.
For many, a village normalizes all incomes and educates about government benefits. People feel comfortable talking about WIC or other benefits.
What are the benefits of making your own village?
You can share resources.
You can ask them to care for your kids / care for their kids.
You can build friendships that last long-term.
If you don’t have a village, where do you start?
If you’re starting a group, remember that you want to find people that connect with you so be authentic.
Start with your values, like community.
Take many classes; there are many free or low-cost resources, like story time at the library.
How can people balance children, a job, and a village?
You can’t always give 100% to everything, so give what you can. Maybe it comes in waves.
Give yourself grace if you aren’t able to give more.
