How to choose a safe sunscreen for babies
First, for babies 6 months and younger, try to keep them in the shade or covered instead of applying sunscreen. If you absolutely need to apply it, only put it on their face.
What ingredients should you avoid?
When reading the ingredients list, make sure there is not oxybenzone or octisalate.
These ingredients irritate babies skin, have scary negative long-term effects, and damage coral reefs.
What ingredients should you look for in a sunscreen?
Look for mineral (aka physical) sunscreen with ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc dioxide.
These are better because they aren’t directly absorbed into the skin, which can cause irritation or clog pores.
Mineral sunscreens are also effective immediately while chemical sunscreens take 15-20 minutes to work.
What else should you consider?
Research shows there’s no need to go higher than SPF 15 - 50.
Look for broad spectrum sunscreen, which blocks UVA and UVB rays.
Sunscreen should be water-resistant; waterproof isn’t as reliable.
What sunscreen should I choose?
There isn’t a “perfect” sunscreen. But here are a few options that I love and use.
