What’s the golden hour?
What is the golden hour?
The golden hour is uninterrupted time for baby to bond with the birth parent. Immediately after birth, the baby is placed on the parent’s chest, skin-to-skin, for up to an hour. Depending on the preferences of the parents and hospital, standard tests can be delayed until after the first hour or be done first.
What are the benefits of the golden hour?
This promotes body feeding. If a baby is given time for skin-to-skin, he or she will crawl up to the parent’s chest and latch on. This baby-led feeding leads to higher rates of exclusive body feeding.
The golden hour helps regulate a baby’s temperature and heart rate.
This will give the birth parent a better chance to bond with their baby.
Immediate skin-to-skin transfers good bacteria and increases a baby’s immunity.
