product swap: squalane

It can be hard to find effective beauty products to use while pregnant or nursing. One amazing product you can use is squalane.

What is squalane?

Squalane is a moisturizer that mimics our skin’s naturally occurring oils. It used to be sourced from shark liver; now, it’s usually made from materials like plants, olives, or sugarcane. It’s an antioxidant that’s perfect for pregnancy, postpartum, and any other time.

squalane vs squalene

Squalane is a more stable version of squalene. Manufacturers take squalene and make it have a longer shelf life as squalane.

why it’s a great swap

  • It’s a great moisturizer. You can add it to your daily serums, or add it to your stomach during pregnancy.

  • It doesn’t clog pores, which makes it a great choice for daily hydration on your face (or hair!)

  • Searching for a pregnancy-safe product to replace your retinol? While not as effective as retinol, squalane reduces fine lines.

  • If you suffer from melasma during pregnancy, add in squalane. It reduces spots.

disclosure

  • I’m not an OB/GYN or a dermatologist or any medical expert, but I’m a (former) pregnant lady who spent lots of time researching this stuff and wants to make it easier for other pregnant folks to figure this out. Before switching products, take your skincare products to the doctor or dermatologist for medical advice.

As a former teacher, I bring realistic, evidence-based, and actionable advice (and LOTS of handouts.) I help families get the tools they need to prepare, so once baby arrives, they can focus on resting and bonding instead of researching or stressing. I’m here to streamline the newborn learning curve and help birth parents, partners, and other family members. There isn’t ONE way to have and raise a little human. I’m here to guide parents to find THEIR way so that they can thrive in the fourth trimester and beyond.
