How to create your perfect cloth diaper wash routine

cloth diaper washing.jpg

so many cloth diaper users share the “perfect” wash routine. But, realistically, there isn’t just one way to wash diapers that’ll work for everyone. This post will give you tons of advice to make your own cloth diaper wash routine.

While every person’s routine will be different, some things should be the same. First, your cloth diapers should be washed every 2 - 3 days, unless they’re being cleaned by a service. Second, there should be two wash cycles.

Two wash cycles

The washer should be about two-thirds full; that allows the diapers to create agitation and get clean. The first cycle should be quick, about 20-30 minutes with warm or cold water. Depending on the detergent you use, you can add one or two scoops. The second cycle should be much longer, at least one hour, with hot water. And you should use two scoops of detergent. Some people will combine these cycles into a long wash with a pre-wash; if you do this, make sure you add detergent between cycles.

drying diapers

There isn’t a right way to dry diapers either. Many companies will suggest that you hang dry covers; this is to protect the snaps and elastics. For the rest of the diaper, you can place it in the dryer or hang dry it.

SUDS

I follow these guidelines from Grovia.

  • Simple wash routine

  • Use enough detergent (they suggest more if using a plant-based detergent)

  • Duration (meaning have the second cycle be at least one hour)

  • Skip additives (meaning don’t add any fabric softener, essential oil, or non-detergent soaps)

I hope this helps you get started on creating your cloth diaper wash routine. Remember that there’s no correct way to wash and dry diapers, and it takes time to create a routine that works for you and your family. You can also sign up below for a step-by-step guide.
