What’s the best cloth diaper?

If you’re just beginning your research into cloth diapers, you might be on the search for the “perfect” cloth diaper. And you’re lost. Because everyone has a different favorite. This article will explain how to choose the best cloth diaper.

Ok, the title of this article is a teeny bit misleading. Why? Because there isn’t a best cloth diaper! The diaper that works for me and my children might not be the best for you and yours. So, I’m going to explain why a certain type of diaper might work best for you and your baby.

Diaper + Cover

This type of diaper, which includes prefolds, fitteds, and flats along with a waterproof cover, will work best for someone who wants a small, minimal stash. These are what you imagine when you think about traditional cloth diapers. They wash and dry quickly and are really durable. And fitteds are amazing for heavy wetters. My favorite part of these is that prefolds and flats can be repurposed into old towels, wash cloths, or inserts for another system.

Diaper + Insert

This type of diaper has two pieces; an outer diaper and an insert that absorbs liquids. This diaper is for you if you want to customize your cloth diapers and be creative. Instead of buying inserts, you can use old shirts, pre-folds or flats, or burp cloths. These diapers can adapt to the needs of your baby. These are for folks who don’t mind getting their hands a little dirty (literally) and spending time assembling the diapers each day.

Complete System

This type of diaper is for someone who wants things to be super easy. Maybe your partner isn’t into cloth diapers. Maybe you have caregivers such as family or daycare teachers who aren’t familiar with cloth. A complete system, also known as an all-in-one, is for you. If you choose this system, it’ll be very simple, but it comes with a higher price tag and a larger stash.

So, contrary to the title of the article, there isn’t a “best” diaper.
